Advertising in Japan - Media Buying for the Indonesian Tourist Board
Rathbone Media have been appointed out of many advertising agencies to undertake the media planning and buying for the Indonesian Tourist Board in Japan focussing on promoting what Indonesia has to offer as a holiday destination for the Japanese traveller. The campaign will begin by utilising regional and national Japanese TV as well as regional & national press in Japan. We also hope to introduce digital advertising throughout the course of the campaign.
With 17,504 tropical islands fringed with beautiful sandy beaches, many uninhabited and a number still even unnamed, the Republic of Indonesia is the largest achipelago in the world. Indonesia is situated between the continents of Australia and Asia and between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, straddling the equator. She boasts a total population of over 215 million from more than 200 ethnic groups. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language.
Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, the Maluku Islands and Papua are amonst the most popular islands. The most popular destination being Bali, "the world's best island resort" with its enchanting culture, beaches, dynamic dances and music. With an array of rainforests to trek through, rolling waves to surf and deep blue pristine seas to dive in where one can swim with dugongs, dolphins and large mantarays, Indonesia is a truely magical destination for any tourist.
Thanks to her location and geology, Indonesia is blessed with an amazingly diverse lanscape. Fertile ricelands on Java and Bali, luxurious rainforests of Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, the savannah grasslands of the Nusatenggara islands, and snow-capped peaks of West Papua. The scenery and imagery is simply wonderful.
There is an abundance of wildlife in Indonesia. From the prehistoric giant Komodo lizard to the Orang Utan and the Java rhino, to the Sulawesi anoa dwarf buffalos, to birds with exquisite plumage like the bird of paradise. Other inhabitants include the Rafflesia; the world's largest flower, wild orchids, a plethora of spices, aromatic hardwood and a large variety of fruit trees. Underwater, there are hundreds of species and colourful coral and tropical fish to cast your eyes upon. Scientists have even found in North Sulawesi the prehistoric coelacanth fish, a "living fossil" fish, predating the dinosaurs living some 400 million years ago. Whales also migrate yearly through these waters from the South Pole.

The viral has now reached the top 100 favourite all-time viewed global sports clips on YouTube with veiwing figures reaching well over 4 million!
The documentary-type clip features three men who run across a lake thanks to the water repellent qualities of their Hi-Tec shoes.
Simon Bonham, Hi-Tec Group Head of Marketing comments, "We wanted to create a piece of entertainment around our hydrophobic footwear and get people talking and thinking about the brand differently." He added, "The idea was to take a traditional form of marketing and totally turn it around on its head, in the process capturing the fun, spirited side of our brand. The reaction to the viral has surpassed all expectations; with people all over the world debating whether this could indeed be possible or not and even trying to do their own Liquid Mountaineering. We've even seen a number of entertaining attempts appear on YouTube and other places on the Web."
Liquid Mountaineering has become one of the most viewed and discussed phenomenons on YouTube in the past month. It has now featured on thousands of blogs. TV coverage of the clip has included Japan, Brazil, Germany, USA, Australia, Korea, Spain, France and Georgia.
Simon Bonham continues, "After the initial buzz and well over 4 millions views on YouTube to date, we thought it was ifnally time to come clean and unveil to the world that Hi-Tec were behing the viral. Drug & Alcohol advertising by Rathbone Media - Mephedrone for EDAAT.
The ban is in effect as of today (16th April), preventing manufacturers tweaking the substances to get around the law.
Drugs are classified according to the harm they cause. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), who advise the government on such matters, say that Mephedrone is similar to amphetamines such as Speed and should be classified as a class B drug.
This means that from today it will be illegal to sell or possess these substances. As a result of this change in the law, there will be a maximum penalty of up to 5 years in jail and an unlimited fine for possession, and 14 years in jail and an unlimited fine for supply & trafficking. The importation of these substances into the country has already recently been banned.
Donia Slyzuk, Strategic Manager Essex Drug & Alcohol Action Team said:
"Just because something says it's legal, doesn't mean it's safe or harmless to use. We are fully supportive of the government's commitment to tackle their emerging threat by making these substances illegal as of today. The Essex Drug & Alcohol Partnership are wholly committed to providing good quality information, advice and education to our communities for all drugs including 'Legal Highs' and commission a number of services to treat and rehabilitate users. Today we have launched a campaign to raise awareness of the health harms of Mephedrone and other so called 'Legal Highs' and to highlight what the new law means to our communities."
Although the risks are now becoming increasingly clear, there is still concern that no one really knows what the exact dangers of Mephdrone are. The current scientific evidence is limited but self reports from users and clinical observations by doctors do suggest that Mephedrone can:
- produce feelings of euphoria and arousal
- make you feel more alert
- make you more talkative
- create feelings of empathy
- reduce inhibitions
- make you feel anxious or paranoid
- over stimulate your heart making it beat faster
- over stimulate your nervous system which can cause fits
- restrict your circulation which can cause cold / blue hands and feet
- damage the nose through snorting and bring on severe nose bleeds
- bring on a low mood and comedown after a binge
- cause death
On the 16th April, EDAP and Rathbone Media launch a 4-week online social media campaign targeting 16-34 year olds in Essex to raise awareness of the new law and its implications whilst also highlighting health harms.

Rathbone Media Group
The Rathbone Story
Rathbone Media Limited otherwise known as the Rathbone Media Group of companies:
Was created by Geoff Cole in 1991. Geoff a former Director of Saatchi and Saatchi for nearly 25 years decided it was time to create his own Media agency. With that, he retired from the London Advertising scene and chose his first home for Rathbone to be in Shenfield, Essex. Geoff originally wanted to create a small advertising agency focusing on just a few, if not a single client and take it a little easier than he had been. Unfortunately for Geoff it was not time for him to retire yet and clients started to approach Geoff for his media planning and buying prowess. Success came quickly and it became apparent that he would need more likeminded media people and he begun to recruit and the company grow. One of the first clients to join Rathbone Media was Topps UK, a little known confectionary brand from the US trying to promote its confectionary to stores throughout the UK. Topps, through careful planning, slowly grew into a nationally advertised product with brand name and catchline that we still know today – "Don't push me, push a Push Pop!". Rathbone Media pushed forward winning client after client and expanding on an annual basis until the present day. Now RML have in excess of 45 staff, 185 clients across a variety of industry sectors and a new premises in Chelmsford Essex, only 20 minutes from London! Rathbone Media also provide media planning and buying, for a large number of media consultants, creative and digital agencies as well. Rathbone Media has continued to push forward winning client after client and even those who have joined the agency recently have seen the company grow in front of their very eyes. Our client dedication, media expertise and advertising insight has brought us to now - being the biggest advertising agency in the South East and it's something we're very proud of. Rathbone Media buy and plan advertising campaigns for clients in the UK and across Europe, and create International Advertising campaigns for the Global audience. Whether it be trade or consumer targeted magazine advertising or TV Buying, Rathbone Media can provide advertising campaigns to accommodate any budget, and have done successfully now for nearly 20 years!
